How the speedo gets its signal, what size you need, and what to know before moving gauges off the stock dash.
Mechanical vs. electronic
Mechanical speedometers are driven by a cable off the front wheel or transmission, and the gauge ratio (1:1, 2:1 or 2240:60) has to match the drive. Most pre-'96 Harleys are cable-driven.
Electronic speedometers read a speed sensor and are what Harley has used since the mid-'90s. Programmable electronic gauges can be calibrated to your tire size and gearing, which makes them the easy choice for customs.
Gauge sizes
Measure the face of the gauge you are replacing, or the mount you plan to use.

Relocating your gauge
Riser and T-bar relocation kits move the speedo from the tank or dash up onto the handlebars. On most late-model bikes the gauge wiring needs to be extended; many kits include a harness, and the rest need an extension harness sold separately.
Mounts are specific to riser type and bar clamp size (1", 1.25", 1.5"), so check both before ordering.
Two things to check first
Year and model. Harley changed gauge connectors and CAN-bus systems over the years — digital dash kits like Dakota Digital and KOSO are listed by specific touring year range. Every product page lists what it fits.
MPH or KPH. Many speedometers come in both. Make sure you pick the one that matches where the bike is registered.
Common questions
Will a new speedo keep my mileage?
Most aftermarket speedometers start at zero or let you set the odometer during programming. Record your mileage before you swap it; some states require a disclosure when the odometer changes.
Do digital dash kits plug straight in?
Dakota Digital MLX and KOSO touring kits are built to replace the stock gauges in the fairing and use plug-in harnesses for the listed years. Some features, like fuel level, may need calibration after install.
How do I calibrate a programmable speedo?
Most use a push-button routine: ride a measured mile or enter a pulse count per mile from the instructions. After a tire or gearing change, re-run the calibration.
Why add an oil pressure gauge?
It's an early warning. A pressure drop on a hot motor shows up on the gauge before it becomes a bottom-end problem, which is why it's common on built motors and bikes with upgraded oil pumps.
Will these fit my Indian?
A few will — Kraus and OG make gauge pods for the Indian Chief. Most of the catalog is Harley-Davidson specific, so check the fitment list on the product page.
Can you install it?
Yes. Dash kits and relocations involve wiring behind the fairing or under the tank. Our Anaheim shop can handle the install and calibration.
