What to check on a battery, how to tell a charging problem from a battery problem, and what to know about extending bars on a CAN Bus bike.
AGM vs. lithium
AGM batteries are sealed, maintenance-free and the stock choice on most Harleys. They handle cold mornings well and are the budget-friendly replacement.
Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries weigh a fraction as much and hold a charge longer while parked, but they need a lithium-compatible charger. Don't put an older lead-acid charger on them.
Common Harley battery sizes
Match the size on your current battery, or check the fitment on the product page.
| Size | Typically fits |
|---|---|
| YTX20HL / GYZ20HL | Touring '97-up, Softail '91-'17, Dyna |
| YIX30L / GYZ32HL | Late-model Touring with high accessory load |
| YTX14 / YTX14L | Sportster and V-Rod models |
Battery or charging system?
With the engine off, a charged battery reads about 12.6-12.8 volts. At around 2,000 rpm it should climb to roughly 14.0-14.6 volts.
If it stays near battery voltage while running, look at the stator and regulator before buying another battery. A new battery on a dead charging system will go flat again.
Bars, bags & wiring
Taller bars mean longer wires. Newer Harleys use CAN Bus handlebar controls and throttle-by-wire, so you need extension kits made for your year, not generic wire.
Switching to LED turn signals? You'll likely need a load equalizer or updated module to stop hyper-flash.
Common questions
Do batteries ship ready to install?
Most AGM batteries in this section are factory-activated and sealed, so they're ready to go. Top them off with a charger before install for the longest life.
Can I use my old charger on a lithium battery?
Only if it has a lithium mode. OptiMate Lithium and similar chargers are made for LiFePO4. Standard lead-acid chargers can damage them.
Do I need more charging output for my stereo?
Big amplifier setups on touring bikes can pull more than the stock charging system makes. A high-output stator and regulator kit helps keep the battery from draining on long rides.
Do I need a tuner after an exhaust or intake?
On fuel-injected bikes, yes in most cases. Changing airflow without adjusting fuel can make the motor run lean and hot. Check emissions rules for your state first.
Why are my LED turn signals flashing fast?
LEDs draw less current than bulbs, so the stock flasher thinks one is out. A load equalizer or turn signal module fixes it.
Can you install it?
Yes. Charging systems, bar wiring extensions and tuner flashes are routine work for our Anaheim shop.
Fitment checked before it ships
Send us the year, model and what's already on the bike, and we'll confirm the part before the order goes out.
