The factory compensator is a ramp and a stack of springs. It's the clank you hear at startup and the slop you feel on and off the throttle — and it's a known wear item.
OEM compensator
Ramp & springTakes up engine pulses by letting the sprocket ride up a cam ramp. Works, but it's noisy, soft on throttle response and wears out — especially on big-inch or tuned motors.

Cushion drivePulses are absorbed by replaceable cushions instead. Throttle response is immediate and the cushions rebuild with a kit when it's time — no new sprocket required.
