For Mark “Junior” Skolnick, Founder & President of Lifestyle Cycles, his connection to Daryl Bassani began long before he was ever part of the motorcycle industry, and it’s a memory that still defines his journey today.
Nearly 26 years ago, before Lifestyle Cycles even existed, Skolnick found himself at a trade show in Cincinnati, eager to break into the business but with little knowledge of where to start. “I didn’t know anything,” he recalls. “I had actually never even heard of Bassani.”
Drawn to a large Bassani booth, he approached a man with long hair and a mustache—unaware that he was speaking directly to Daryl Bassani himself. What followed was a moment that would leave a lasting impact. “He just lit up,” Skolnick says. “He took me over and started showing me pipe after pipe, explaining why they were good and how the industry worked.”
As Skolnick shared his ambitions, Bassani did something that set him apart. “He put his arm around me and just wouldn’t stop talking,” he recalls. “I got the best education right there.” What stood out most wasn’t just the knowledge—it was the passion. “I realized this guy cared so much about the industry. It was his life.”
That moment of mentorship stuck. “I think it meant something to him to take the time and mentor me that day,” Skolnick says. “And it’s something that will always stay with me.”
That same spirit defines what Skolnick calls the Bassani lifestyle—a way of living rooted in passion, innovation, and giving back. “He was everywhere,” he says. “Sponsoring stunt riders, building pipes for three-wheelers, supporting races—he was always involved.”
But what left the deepest impression was Bassani’s generosity. “He’d always come up to me and say, ‘Hey Junior, how can I help today?’” Skolnick recalls. Whether it was supporting young racers or investing in the next generation, Bassani consistently gave back to the community that supported him. “His lifestyle was very giving,” he says. “I’ve never met anyone who had anything bad to say about him.”
For Skolnick, those moments became something more than memories—they became a blueprint. “I always thought, I want to be him. I want to do what he does,” he admits. “That’s something I want to emulate.”
Today, that vision has come full circle. With Lifestyle Cycles now helping lead Bassani into its next chapter, Skolnick sees the responsibility as both an honor and a challenge. “Those are enormous shoes to fill,” he says. “The brand is iconic. It’s legendary. Daryl did so much for this industry.”
Still, he’s confident in what lies ahead. “Without a doubt, we’re going to continue the legacy,” Skolnick says. “It means a lot to me to be part of bringing the company back and carrying it forward.”
And while the legacy remains the foundation, the future is already taking shape. “We’ve got some great new stuff coming out,” he adds. “The engineers are getting crafty—they’re working overtime.”
For Skolnick, it’s about more than just preserving what Daryl Bassani built—it’s about honoring it, growing it, and making sure the next generation of riders experiences the same passion that first inspired him decades ago.
