Kevin Tech Tips: 5.25" to 6.5" Speaker Adapter Installation
Tips! So today on Kev's Tech Tips, we're going to show you how to take the 5 and 1/4-inch speakers that came in your fairing from 1996 to 2013 and throw them in the garbage. We're going to upgrade you with a pair of our speaker adapters to put a big 6 and 1/2-inch speaker in there for much better sound.
Start off by pulling the factory speaker wires from your stock 5 and 1/4-inch speaker. With a T25 bit, remove the stock 5 and 1/4-inch speaker. This will come out as one complete assembly.
All right, now we're going to remove the stock cloth grill if you're going to reuse it from the plastic adapter that came with the bike. We're going to reuse this. Your speaker adapter is going to come with three stainless Phillips screws. We're going to want to orientate our speaker adapter in a way that we never use the bottom inside screw of the fairing, as it's just not deep enough, and a screw will go right through it. So, we'll orientate our grill.
Slide a screw in there. Now we're going to get our first screw started.
First screw started.
Second screw started.
Okay, now with our third screw started, we'll tighten them all down.
Now is a good time to inspect your speaker bracket. If it's been broken off here at the end at any point, go ahead and replace it. This is the new style Harley speaker adapter that's reinforced and will not break. We will be making sure that this lines up with one of the speaker screws that we use; that way, this bracket is still supporting the 6 and 1/2-inch speaker adapter.
All right, now with our 6 and 1/2-inch speaker, the first thing we’re going to do is start at around the 7 o'clock area and go through this bracket into the speaker. Line it up with the hole in the speaker adapter, leave it loose, and then we'll start our other three screws.
Now you can tighten all the screws.
Reconnect your speaker wires, keeping in mind the green one is always going to be your negative, and the white one is your positive.
All right, super easy! In just a couple of minutes, you've gone from a small 5 and 1/4-inch speaker up to a much larger 6 and 1/2-inch speaker that's going to give you much better bass response and have a much smoother sound when you're riding down the road.
